About

Nicole Wassall asks us to reconcile logic and imagination.

Fine tuning her practice, whilst simultaneously pushing its boundaries, she balances a unique mix of intellectual and practical curiosity. Early in her career she was fascinated by neuroscience and used it to inform her practice. More recently that vein of thought has extended into sketching with poetry, in her drive to creatively respond to concerns of humanity. So, whilst her practice is varied, there is an anchor in her intellectual and emotional concern, ‘De rerum natura’ (On the nature of things).

Her practice is a cross-disciplined exploration of belief, myth, science, spirituality, superstition, environmental concerns, feminism, magic, and absurdity. Based in London her studio is a dynamic space; one week she will be embroidering an 8 meter length of fine fabric and the next mixing egg yolk and pigments to make tempera paint, but there again, if you go a month later she could be experimenting with photography, sound and scent.

Nicole has exhibited in America, Australia, Belgium, England, Hong Kong and Poland. She completed an MA in Fine Art (Central Saint Martins, London), was shortlisted for the Clifford Chance Sculpture Award and Saatchi Sensations awards on graduation. She has shown her work regularly with Fiumano Clase, has been a panelist for London Art Fair (Women and Art – The Female Shape of Activism), been exhibited multiple times in New York with Rick Wester Fine Art and a book about her practice ‘The Law of Unplanned Consequence’ was published in 2014. Her work is also included in various catalogues, alongside artists like Nancy Spero and Mary Kelly.

She has various works in the Ramsey collection and her works are in the collections of editors of various cultural magazines (including Apollo – The International Art Magazine, Tattler and Love Magazine). Other collectors of her work include a director at the Wolfsonian (Miami) and various prominent artists including a key YBA and a Royal Academician.
